Winterthur – The Stadtwerk Winterthur climate fund is supporting Vatorex AG in the development of sustainable parasite control in large-scale beekeeping operations. The Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) is being funded for a contribution to the circular economy in the construction industry.
(CONNECT) The Stadtwerk Winterthur climate fund has been promoting regional and local projects on sustainable energy use and climate protection since 2007. Two new projects will be funded with a total of CHF 60,000, the city of Winterthur announced in a press release. Both projects contribute to reducing CO2 emissions.
Vaporex AG wants to reduce emissions in the fight against parasites in large-scale beekeeping operations. She has developed a process in which the Varroa mite is killed using heat rather than chemicals. Compared to the conventional method, Lifehive produces around 50 kilograms less CO2 per hive, writes the city of Winterthur: "The Vatorex method is fully automated, solar-powered, energy-independent and reduces the frequency of travel to check the hives". The Stadtwerk Winterthur climate fund is supporting the Winterthur-based company with CHF 50,000 to help develop Lifehive to market maturity.
The Institute of Constructive Design at the ZHAW Department of Architecture has been awarded CHF 10,000 for a contribution to the circular economy in the construction industry. Specifically, the institute has developed a new method for the reuse of concrete components. The Re-Use Concrete Structures project is therefore investigating how such concrete components can be integrated into new load-bearing structures. ce/hs
