Dübendorf ZH/San Francisco – Researchers at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) have published the largest open battery dataset with partners such as the Linux Foundation. The data comes from experiments on Empa’s Aurora robot platform. They are intended to accelerate global research.
(CONNECT) Together with the Linux Foundation 's Battery Data Alliance and other partners, Empa has published the largest open data set to date in the new Battery Data Format (BDF). The data comes from thousands of fully automated experiments carried out with the autonomous battery robot Aurora. Empa had been developing Aurora with the company Chemspeed Technologies from Füllinsdorf BL since 2023.
The researchers are thus setting a new standard for high-quality, machine-readable battery data and international research into new battery materials, according to a report by Empa. In addition, a publication has appeared in the specialist journal "Batteries & Supercaps" that scientifically describes the robot-assisted research platform and classifies the data set. This is freely accessible on the EU-funded online storage service Zenodo and is intended to boost battery research worldwide.
"If scientific data is structured according to common standards and provided with complete traceability, it can have an impact far beyond individual projects," explains Corsin Battaglia, Head of the Empa Materials for Energy Conversion Laboratory and Professor at the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich(ETH) and Lausanne(EPFL). "In this form, they become a shared resource that promotes collaboration, accelerates discoveries and can change entire fields of research."
The basis for this new generation of standardized battery data was developed in close cooperation between Empa and the Norwegian research institute SINTEF as part of the EU battery research initiative Battery2030+ and the ETH Board 's Open Research Data initiative. ce/mm
