AI is driving the cost of cognitive work toward zero. If the answer, the content, and the analysis cost almost nothing—what, then, can you even charge for anymore?
Many of today’s business models have an uncomfortable answer to this question. Entire categories were built on having access to information, serving as the necessary intermediary, and knowing something that customers didn’t know—and this landscape is shifting rapidly. Some moats will soon look like puddles.
So the real question isn’t whether AI changes anything. It’s where value goes when it’s no longer reflected in earnings: Which companies still have a moat—and what does it really consist of? What intellectual property is still worth defending if everything that can be produced can also be reproduced? From a legal standpoint, which business transactions can still be defended? In which other areas is it still worth investing? And what will remain of this, both economically and legally, once the obvious answers have become commonplace?
Let’s figure it out together.
