Almost every third payment is made by mobile

Winterthur/St.Gallen – Mobile payment is expanding its leading position among payment methods. Currently, almost one in three payments in Switzerland is made using a mobile device. Mobile payment beats cash even for the smallest amounts. This is shown by the latest Swiss Payment Monitor.

(CONNECT) "Mobile payment extends its leading position" is the title of a press release by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) on the latest edition of the Swiss Payment Monitor. It has been compiled every six months since 2018 by the ZHAW School of Management and Law and the University of St.Gallen. Compared to the May 2024 survey, paying with mobile devices in the current survey from November 2024 has advanced by 3.9 percentage points to a share of 30.7%. At the same time, cash payments fell by 1.5 percentage points to a share of 24.2%.

The amount to be paid now plays a subordinate role in mobile payments. "In the latest survey, even the smallest amounts of less than five francs were paid more frequently by mobile phone than by cash for the first time", Tobias Trütsch, payment economist at the University of St.Gallen, is quoted as saying in the press release. Only when it comes to in-store payments does cash take the top spot with 28.8 percent.

However, their share has fallen by 1.7 percentage points compared to the last survey. At the same time, payments with mobile devices increased their share by 4.3 percentage points to 24.4%. The debit card has a share of 33.7 percent, of which 28.0 percent is attributable to non-mobile use. "As the new generation of debit cards can also be stored in e-wallets such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay, mobile payments are increasingly being settled via a debit card, especially on site," explains ZHAW payment expert Marcel Stadelmann in the press release. ce/hs
