Auterion and Rheinmetall want to create a standard for military drones

Zurich/Düsseldorf – Auterion will contribute its operating systems for drones to a cooperation with the technology group Rheinmetall. Together, the two companies want to develop and distribute a common military standard for the software components of various military drones.

By signing a cooperation agreement, Rheinmetall and Auterion have established a long-term partnership. Auterion, a provider of operating systems and apps for military and civilian drone applications, and the Düsseldorf-based system provider for defence technology will work closely together in the future on the development of standardized software-based components for unmanned drone systems, according to a statement from Auterion.

Both are pooling their expertise to create a military industry standard for the control and operation of unmanned drone systems for air, land and naval forces. Rheinmetall is contributing its operational experience. Various drone systems from Rheinmetall have been in use by the German Bundeswehr for many years and were deployed in Ukraine for several months.

The more than 200 different unmanned aerial systems in Ukraine make military training very costly and time-consuming, says Dr. Timo Haas, Chief Digital Officer of Rheinmetall AG. In addition, the interoperability of the systems is not guaranteed. "With our approach, there will no longer be any need for system-dependent user training or system-specific integration into an overall system network in the future."

According to Auterion CEO Lorenz Meier, the AuterionOS operating system allows "all drones to be integrated on a common basis. Our software stack has already proven itself in use and thus enables software-defined defense." ce/mm
