CUTISS and Tecan automate the production of skin tissue

(CONNECT) The biotech company CUTISS AG, based in Schlieren, has entered into a strategic partnership with Tecan, a biotechnology research company based in Männedorf. According to a press release, the collaboration is intended to enable the industrialization of CUTISS' automation platform for the production of personalized skin tissue therapies. Tecan's expertise in industrial automation and its global manufacturing capabilities will enable CUTISS to bring its flagship product, denovoSkin, to market on a commercial scale.

denovoSkin is a personalized, biotechnologically produced human skin graft. It can be used in patients with severe skin injuries or for reconstructive procedures and is intended to replace autologous skin transplants with better results in the future. According to the company, denovoSkin is currently in the final stage of the Phase 3 clinical trial, in which it is being used in patients with severe burns. Swissmedic, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have already granted denovoSkin Orphan Drug Designation (ODD) for the treatment of burns, which should facilitate the approval process.

With the help of Tecan, CUTISS is now working on scaling up the production of denovoSkin through automation. The CUTISS automation platform, a patented and fully self-contained complete system, is designed to enable decentralized production, cost-effective scaling and a high return on investment. "Tecan's expertise and global infrastructure will strengthen our industrial capabilities and enable rapid scaling of our automated tissue therapy platform," said CUTISS CEO Dr. Daniela Marino, according to the press release.
