ETH's RoBoa is about to be launched on the market

Zurich – A team of engineers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) has developed a snake-shaped robot that can be used in confined spaces. Now the RoBoa is about to be launched on the market.

A team of engineering researchers at ETH 's Autonomous Systems Lab has developed a snake-shaped robot that can move through very confined spaces. The RoBoa is designed for use in pipes, ducts or rubble, ETH Zurich reported in a press release. Thanks to a Pioneer Fellowship from the university, the RoBoa is now about to be launched on the market.

The snake-shaped robot is made of soft materials and can currently be made up to 100 meters long with the help of compressed air. This makes the RoBoa safe both for contact with people and for use in environments where there is a risk of explosion, writes ETH. RoBoa is equipped with a microphone and loudspeaker so that direct communication can be established, especially in emergency situations. The basic features of the innovative robot were developed as part of a student focus project. On November 21, the RoBoa will be presented at the ETH Industry Day @ Open-i at the Kongresshaus Zurich. ce/hs
