Bern/Volketswil ZH – Neustark and the construction services provider BEREUTER are commissioning a joint CO2 storage facility in Volketswil. The plan is to store 900 tons of carbon dioxide here every year.
(CONNECT) The Bern-based ClimateTech company Neustark has joined forces with the BEREUTER Group in Volketswil to commission a plant for storing carbon dioxide in mineral construction waste. According to a press release, the plant at Bereuter's headquarters will store 900 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
The CO2 captured from biogas plants is transported directly to the building material recyclers, where it is injected directly into the granulate of demolished concrete as an additive in the recycling process using Neustark's technology. The CO2 is permanently bound in a mineralization process.
In the cooperation between the two companies, the biogas comes directly from the plant in Volketswil, which is directly adjacent to the BEREUTER Group's factory premises. The plant is operated by energy provider Axpo, and the CO2 gas is fed directly into the storage facility via a 50-meter-long pipeline.
“This constellation is unique in the world. Normally, we liquefy the CO2, transport it over several kilometers and return it to a gaseous state at the storage facility,” Valentin Gutknecht, co-founder and co-CEO of Neustark, is quoted as saying in the press release. “In contrast, we can use the CO2 in Volketswil directly from the site.”
Adrian Thomann, CEO of the BEREUTER Group, is delighted to be able to “use Neustark's technology to turn demolition material into an additional CO2 sink”. ce/ww
