Winterthur/Bern/Basel – Early planning of the future IT architecture enables the efficient creation of Digital Product Passports (DPP). This is demonstrated by a pilot project by Burckhardt Compression, GS1 Switzerland and BloqSens. The EU is gradually making such DPPs mandatory for almost all products sold.
(CONNECT) Burckhardt Compression from Winterthur, GS1 Switzerland from Bern and BloqSens from Basel have researched the way to create Digital Product Passports(DPP). According to a press release, the three companies wanted to clarify what the requirements of the DPP regulation are. They also pursued the goal of identifying opportunities for companies and realizing the demo version of a DPP using an exemplary product.
The implementation of an EU regulation, which began in 2024, will gradually require such DPPs for all products sold in the EU. This initiative is part of the Ecodesign Regulation for sustainable products. It aims to increase transparency in the value chains of products by providing comprehensive information on their origin, materials, environmental impact and disposal recommendations. This is intended to close the gap between consumer demand for transparency and the current lack of reliable product data.
DPPs are expected to become mandatory for compressors by 2030 at the latest, as they are considered products that are relevant to energy consumption. The pilot project focused on a compressor valve from Burckhard Compression and examined the impact on IT architecture and data management.
The three partners came to the conclusion that "early planning of the future IT architecture enables an efficient rollout of the future DPP," says BloqSens CEO Peter Krummenacher. The use of established GS1 standards enables a high level of interoperability with other systems. Dominik Halbeisen, Standards Expert Technical Industries at GS1, emphasizes that "open, globally interoperable standards" make it possible to "implement new requirements as quickly as possible and thus have a direct impact". ce/mm
