Pinterest opens Engineering Excellence Hub in Zurich

(CONNECT) Pinterest is opening its new Engineering Excellence Hub in Zurich to continue using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to improve the user experience on the platform, according to a statement on Channel X. The hub develops innovations in AI and shopping infrastructure and can build on proprietary technologies such as Visual Search Technology, which it claims outperforms Large Language Models (LLMs) by 30 percent in identifying and recommending customer-relevant content.

Pinterest's AI portfolio also includes the Taste Graph, which maps over 80 billion searches, saves, pins and clicks to showcase user preferences and needs. AI has also doubled the relevance of ads on Pinterest in the past two years, the company reports. "At Pinterest, we see first-hand how AI is changing the way people discover ideas they love. By focusing on AI-powered solutions that combine users' unique tastes with inspiration, we create personalized experiences and meaningful outcomes for our global partners," Matt Madrigal, Chief Technology Officer at Pinterest, is quoted as saying.

The company will also be strengthened by the Swiss newcomers Matthias Zenger and Mirjam Wattenhofer. As Vice President Engineering Platforms, Zenger will be responsible for the technical infrastructure and basic engineering platforms, while Wattenhofer will develop the social network's e-commerce technology and user experience as a Distinguished Engineer. Pinterest reported a record high of 578 million users worldwide in the second quarter of 2025 and generated revenue of 998 million dollars. Further AI-supported products are being planned. ce/yes
