Scanvio receives 3.4 million dollars in fresh capital

(CONNECT) Scanvio can take the next steps towards market launch with fresh capital. The spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich(ETH), founded in 2023, has raised 3.4 million dollars in an oversubscribed seed financing round. According to a press release, the network of investors from Germany and Switzerland includes StartAngels, Superangels, Stöckli Medical, Venture Kick and Kickfund, SICTIC, S2S Ventures and individual angel investors.

Scanvio is dedicated to improving the diagnosis of endometriosis. This chronic disease affects around one in ten women worldwide. Until now, it has taken an average of eight to twelve years for the benign growths of the uterine lining (endometrium) in the abdomen to be diagnosed. The women affected usually have to endure severe pain before and during each menstrual period.

Today, endometriosis is usually diagnosed using laparoscopy. Scanvio wants to make this burdensome and expensive procedure obsolete with the help of its algorithm. This algorithm automatically evaluates ultrasound images of the uterus and recognizes what usually remains hidden to the naked eye. Its developers, ETH researcher Fabian Laumer and gynecologist Michael Bajka, want to use it to help medical professionals diagnose endometriosis during routine ultrasound examinations of the abdomen. This method is currently being tested in collaboration with the ETH Medical Data Science Group at Baden Cantonal Hospital, which reported on the project.

Together with the team of investors, "we will create one of the most impactful applications of AI that will directly help millions of women receive a timely and accurate diagnosis," CEO and co-founder Stefan Tuchschmid is quoted as saying.
