(CONNECT) SBB and Siemens Mobility, based in Wallisellen, Switzerland, will be testing an obstacle detection system from August 8. According to a press release, the aim is to record environmental data such as objects located on the railroad line and to ensure safer and more reliable rail traffic.

The system, consisting of a camera, radar, thermal imaging camera and GPS receiver, will be installed on a Zurich S-Bahn locomotive for one year. It has no impact on locomotive crews or rail operations

Obstacle detection will be tested in various conditions during the trial period, for example on open stretches of road, in tunnels or in the shunting area. Various weather conditions such as fog, snow and rain should also challenge the system.

At the same time, SBB and Siemens Mobility are continuously evaluating the data collected in order to assess the performance of the tested system. The data, which may contain images of travelers, will be deleted after their purpose has been fulfilled. Data protection is guaranteed by measures such as access restrictions and data encryption, according to the press release. ce/yes
