Schlieren ZH – VirtaMed is adding the RoboS to its existing simulators for surgical procedures. The medtech company, which focuses on mixed reality, is presenting this new console for medical training for the first time at the IMSH science conference in Orlando in mid-January.
(CONNECT) VirtaMed announces the launch of its new RoboS. The Schlieren-based pioneer in surgical training using mixed reality simulators is presenting this robot at this year's International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare(IMSH 2025). The science conference will take place from January 10 to 14 in Orlando, Florida, USA. Demonstrations can be booked in advance, which the medtech company will hold at its stand.
VirtaMed emerged in 2007 from a research project conducted by the Zurich University of Applied Sciences(ZHAW) and the Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology in Zurich(ETH) and Lausanne(EPFL). The aim was to develop a surgical simulator. "In addition to all the know-how at ETH, it took the pragmatism and hands-on mentality of the ZHAW to develop the prototype into a finished product," VirtaMed co-founder Daniel Bachofen is quoted as saying in an article published by the ZHAW. "Neither graduates from one university nor the other would have managed this on their own."
VirtaMed's portfolio now includes simulation consoles for orthopaedics, obstetrics, gynaecology, urology and general surgery that are distributed worldwide. They offer doctors a risk-free and immersive environment for training and performing complex procedures.
The new RoboS is said to replicate critical interfaces, tactile feedback and the ergonomic setup, including handles, workspace, immersive display and seating. This practical experience is intended to promote the development of fine motor skills and spatial imagination. A new feedback assistant shows "where points are being lost". In addition, the RoboS continuously collects data in order to improve training.
VirtaMed is based in the Innovation and Young Entrepreneur Center IJZ and is a member of Start Smart Schlieren. ce/mm
