ZuriMED brings shoulder surgery product to the USA

Zurich – ZuriMED is preparing to launch its Fiberlock system on the American market. At the end of December, the Zurich-based start-up received local approval for its product for the minimally invasive surgical repair of soft tissue.

According to its website, ZuriMED Technologies AG is preparing to launch its Fiberlock system in the USA. The start-up company only received the necessary approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) at the end of December. The Fiberlock system is intended to be used for tendon tears in the rotator cuff. According to ZuriMED, these are among the most common shoulder injuries.

The start-up's development consists of a patch that is implanted on the tendon and acts like a medical felt material. The second component is an instrument that has been specially developed to fix the implant. The system is intended to offer an alternative to traditional repair techniques, which, according to ZuriMED, often fail at the interface between the suture material and tendon tissue.

"I firmly believe that ZuriMED's unique technology has the potential to be a game changer in shoulder surgery and can help us improve patient outcomes," says Prof. Dr. Karl Wieser, Head of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at Balgrist University Hospital. ZuriMED was spun off from the Laboratory for Orthopaedic Biomechanics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich(ETH) and the University of Zurich(UZH), giving it direct access to research laboratories on the Balgrist Campus during development. ce/ssp
